Vienna International Arbitration Forum" on "Investment and Commercial Arbitration - Similarities and Divergences (November 2008)

On 21 November 2008 Professor Walter H. Rechberger, Department for Civil Procedure Law, and Professor August Reinisch, Department for European, International and Comparative Law, co-hosted the “Vienna International Arbitration Forum” on “Investment and Commercial Arbitration – Similarities and Divergences”. The Conference took place at the University of Vienna and focused on topical issues in international investment and commercial arbitration. It featured speakers from academia as well as practitioners. Christina Knahr and Julia Mair (both University of Vienna) spoke about “Consolidation of Proceedings in Investment and Commercial Arbitration”, Stephan Wittich (University of Vienna) and Franz T. Schwarz (Wilmer Hale, London) addressed “The Limits of Party Autonomy in Investment and Commercial Arbitration”, Irmgard Marboe (University of Vienna) and Vladimir Pavic (University of Belgrade) dealt with the issue of “Annulment of ICSID Awards” and “Challenge of Arbitral Awards before Domestic Courts”, Noah Rubins (Freshfields, Paris) and Christopher Kee (Deakin University) spoke about “Independence, Impartiality and Duty of Disclosure in Investment and Commercial Arbitration”. The Conference was very well attended, particularly by members of the Austrian arbitration community, and the presentations were followed by engaging debates about the topical issues identified by the speakers.

Vienna Conference on Standards of Investment Protection (September 2007)

In September 2007 Prof. Reinisch hosted a Conference on Standards of Investment Protection. It brought together a group of distinguished academics and practitioners in the field of investment arbitration who analyzed the way how the standards routinely included in numerous BITs and other international investment agreements are actually applied. The speakers were Christoph Schreuer (University of Vienna), who introduced the overall theme of the Conference, Anna Joubin-Bret (UNCTAD, Geneva) who spoke on Admission Standards, Andrea K. Bjorklund (University of California Davis) discussing National Treatment, Andreas Ziegler (Université de Lausanne) on MFN Treatment, Veijo Heiskanen (Lalive and Partners, Geneva) on Arbitrary and Unreasonable Measures, Catherine Yannaca-Small (OECD, Paris) who analyzed Fair and Equitable Treatment, Giuditta Cordero Moss (University of Oslo) who looked into Full Protection and Security, Anne K. Hoffmann (Python & Peter, Geneva) dealing with Indirect Expropriation, August Reinisch (University of Vienna) on the Legality of Expropriations, and Thomas Wälde (University of Dundee) who discussed Transfers.

Young Scholars Conference in International Economic Law (June 2007)

In June 2007 Prof. Reinisch and Dr. Knahr organized the Young Scholars Conference in International Economic Law. This Conference, which has been held by different German law schools once a year over the past few years, took place in Vienna for the first time. In line with the focus of this project the organizers determined the conference theme to be "Topical Issues and Recent Developments in International Investment Law". Young scholars from Germany, Austria and Switzerland gave presentations on different issues that have become controversial in recent investment arbitrations.
